With over 30 years experience John Pickering is one of the leading personal injury and clinical negligence lawyers in the UK. Following his role as National Head of Irwin Mitchell's Personal Injury Division, John was appointed National Managing Partner of the firm in 2009.

John's credentials include amongst others, immediate past President of PEOPIL (Pan European Organisation of Personal Injury Lawyers), Vice President of The Academy of European Law (ERA), UK Governor for the AAJ (American Association for Justice) including chair of the AAJ's International Relations Committee) and former member of APIL Executive Committee (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers); his exceptional contribution within the field of personal injury law has been recognised by his acceptance as a Senior Fellow by APIL.

John's specialist areas of expertise include clinical negligence, catastrophic injury cases (brain and spinal injuries), product liability and cases with an international element. His reputation as "a leader in his field" has led him to spearhead many high profile cases both in the UK and internationally, including test cases on litigation including Heil -v- Rankin (where he acted for the 2 most seriously injured claimants - Warren and Annable), Ward -v- Newalls, the Tobacco case (Hodgson & Others -v- Imperial Tobacco Ltd and Gallaher and Hergali), and the British Coal Vibration White Finger Case.

Most recently he acted on behalf of the families and survivors of the Hatfield and Selby train crashes and is currently dealing with the Cumbrian train crash. In the context of clinical negligence he has successfully litigated many cerebral palsy cases and recovered substantial damages.

He is actively involved in law reform. He was the claimant's solicitor representative on the Chief Medical Officer's Advisory Group which led to the report "Making Amends" and the subsequent NHS Redress Scheme. He was on the Master of the Rolls Working Party on Structured Settlements and has participated in the Civil Justice Council's Clinical Negligence and Serious Personal Injury Committee. He is now an appointed Member of the Council.

John lectures widely both nationally and internationally on personal injury and clinical negligence. His published works include articles for acclaimed legal journals such as the Journal of Personal Injury Law and is editor for Jordan's Civil Court Service.

John's passion for the work he does also leads him into charitable work. He is a Trustee for the charity Neurocare, supporting the neurosurgical department of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. He is a past vice chair of the Child Brain Injury Trust.

John resides in Sheffield with his wife Julie and has two children. He enjoys the theatre, tennis, golf and motor racing.
